Writing Assignment #4

Pepper, 1930 (35P)
EDWARD WESTON
PEPPER
source

This photo of a pepper has many areas that make it strong. One of them being lighting. The way the light hits the pepper creates interesting shapes against the edges of the curves. The curves bring your eye around the photo. It has a clear focal point of the stem in the bottom right. The curves bring your eye to it and the rough texture against the smooth texture makes it stand out. The photo has a unique perspective. It is close to the pepper and above it looking down on it. Being close up emphasizes the textures. Such a small subhect becomes interesting once you zoom on it. What it is weak in is depth of the image. It seems to have on layer, the pepper. There is also no spacial relationship between any objects. It doesn't create an emotional response. If I was to improve the photo I would photograph the whole pepper instead of leaving the eye wandering for more in the back of the photo. I would also play around with depth of field, seeing if a part of the pepper would look good out of focus, creating more emphasis on the stem.
